A Milestone Appointment
Ritchie McKay, the winningest coach in Liberty Flames men's basketball history, has been named a court coach for the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team training camp. The invitation reflects his reputation for developing talent and his deep knowledge of the game.
The camp convenes at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, where 35 athletes from the graduating classes of 2026, 2027 and 2028 will train under a distinguished staff. McKay will join head coach Anthony Grant alongside assistants Nate Oats and Matt Langel as one of four court coaches during the opening phase.
Preparing for a Continental Showdown
The training camp serves as a prelude to the 2026 FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup, scheduled to take place in Leon, Mexico. The United States will open Group A play against Argentina on June 1, Mexico on June 2 and Brazil on June 4, before advancing to quarterfinals, semifinals and medal games later in the week.
Beyond the immediate tournament, the event offers a pathway to the 2027 FIBA U19 Men's World Cup, with the top four teams earning berths. Competing nations include Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela, underscoring the regional depth of talent.
McKay's recent contract extension through the 2031‑32 season cements his long‑term commitment to Liberty. Over the past eight years the program has amassed a .755 winning percentage, nine 20‑win seasons and four conference tournament titles, placing the Flames among the nation's elite programs.
A Legacy of Excellence
In addition to his domestic achievements, McKay previously contributed to international success as an assistant coach at the 1997 World University Games, where he helped secure a gold medal. His blend of strategic acumen and player development continues to shape the next generation of basketball leaders.
