Robotic precision reshapes soccer field upkeep
A new robot called Turf Tank is being deployed across the Portland metro area to paint the lines, hashtags, numbers and logos on soccer fields with pinpoint accuracy.
The machine scans each pitch, calculates the exact dimensions and then applies the markings in a matter of minutes, a speed that dramatically outpaces manual labor.
Reilly Unger, who grew up playing at the Eastside Timbers Sports Complex and now oversees maintenance there, says the technology has cut the time needed to mark a single field from about an hour to just twenty minutes.
That efficiency frees up staff to turn their attention to other aspects of the complex, from turf health to equipment upgrades, improving the overall quality of the facilities.
Unger, together with OYSA representative Andrew Parshall, notes that the robot is also available for rent, allowing other clubs and parks in the region to benefit from the same precision marking.
