A neighborhood basketball tournament that’s more than a game
The Hood 2 Hood Basketball Tournament has become a summer staple in Rochester, drawing teams from across the city’s neighborhoods to compete in a spirit of camaraderie.
Organizers say the event is designed to channel the energy of the court into a broader message of peace, unity and brotherhood, turning each dribble and shot into a reminder that shared goals can bridge divides.
Justin Morris, who serves as co‑director of the tournament, explains that the initiative grew out of a desire to give young people a positive outlet while reinforcing the idea that neighborhoods can work together.
For DaShawn Blocker, a regular participant, the tournament is personal. He says the game lets him represent his community and connect with peers who share his love of basketball.
The field of players ranges from former college athletes to newcomers who honed their skills at local recreation centers, creating a melting pot where experience meets fresh talent.
Beyond the competition, the event serves as a gathering point for families and friends, reinforcing the notion that sport can be a catalyst for social cohesion.
