The Rockridge football team has turned the remainder of the season into a tribute to junior receiver Drew Hawk, who was sidelined by a spinal injury sustained over the summer. He had been expected to compete for a starting spot, but the injury forced the squad to adjust and rally around a deeper purpose.
A Season of Solidarity
Junior teammate Trevor McKag, who has known Hawk since third grade, said the season has taken on a personal meaning, describing the emotional difficulty of watching his best friend unable to play.
He recalled their friendship dating back to elementary school and said the team now plays with Hawk in mind, promising to honor him on the field.
Close friend Daniel Bell described the shock of hearing about the accident and the way the team now plays for Hawk in spirit, remembering his presence during games.
Head coach Sam Graves reflected that the incident reminded him that football is not a matter of life or death, and that the team’s dedication to Hawk underscores a broader lesson about gratitude and perseverance.
Graves assured the players they would honor Hawk by playing with dedication and not taking the opportunity for granted, turning the season into a collective commitment.
