Remembering a Legend
A sea of fans filled FirstEnergy Stadium on a crisp summer evening, their voices rising in unison as a limited‑edition Rocky Colavito bobblehead was handed to the first 2,500 ticket holders. The ceremony, organized by the Reading Baseballtown Hall of Fame, turned the stadium’s historic lights into a backdrop for memories of a player whose swing once echoed through the minor leagues and whose name still resonates in the city’s baseball lore.
Colavito’s career, which began in 1953 at Reading Municipal Memorial Stadium as a Cleveland Indian, quickly blossomed into a power‑hitting phenomenon. He led the American League in home runs in 1959, earned a place among the sport’s elite, and later found himself at the center of a controversial trade to the Detroit Tigers that still sparks debate among baseball historians.
Beyond the statistics, those who knew him personally recall a man whose devotion to his family was as steadfast as his throwing arm. He met his wife, Carmen Perrotti, while playing in Reading, and together they raised a household in Muhlenberg and Bern Townships. Their children — Steve, Marisa McGrath, and Rocky Jr. — stood beside him at the tribute, a testament to the unwavering support that shaped their lives.
The evening’s program blended nostalgia with gratitude, highlighting not only Colavito’s on‑field achievements but also his role as a mentor and father. Speakers recounted how his belief in his sons’ abilities helped them pursue their own paths, while his partnership with Carmen reinforced a home life built on love and encouragement.
As the night drew to a close, the crowd’s applause lingered, echoing the cheers that once filled municipal stadiums across the region. Colavito’s legacy, now enshrined in the Reading Baseballtown Hall of Fame, continues to inspire new generations of players who see in him a model of talent, perseverance, and familial devotion.
