A Season Defined by Depth and Tradition
Roland‑Story High School’s baseball team has compiled a 21‑1 record this spring, positioning itself second in the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association’s Class 2A rankings. The Rams have turned consistency into a competitive edge, blending a potent offense with a stingy pitching staff.
The offense leads the classification in runs scored, RBIs and walks, while the mound crew maintains a staff ERA of 2.99, having allowed just 84 runs over the course of the season. Wins over nationally ranked opponents — including 3A No. 4 Saydel and 1A No. 2 Martensdale St. Marys — underscore the team’s ability to thrive against top competition.
A key ingredient of the Rams’ identity is the ritualistic routine of senior Aiden Frey, whose pre‑game backflips and double‑socked foot have become a rallying point for teammates and fans alike. Those superstitions, along with the squad’s balanced lineup, reflect a culture that values both performance and tradition.
The team is locked in a tight battle with Saydel for the Heart of Iowa Conference title, a contest that could shape postseason seeding. With 30 wins from the 2021 campaign as a benchmark, the Rams are aiming to surpass that total and secure a berth in the state tournament for the first time since 2015.
Coach Chris Hill emphasizes the depth of the roster, noting that multiple players contribute significantly on both sides of the ball. This balance not only fuels the current winning streak but also prepares the squad for the rigors of a potential deep playoff run.
