The Minnesota Wild announced this week that they have inked 23-year-old defenseman Roman Schmidt to a one-year, two-way contract for the upcoming 2026-27 season.
A Strategic Move for the Wild
Schmidt, a native of Kitchener, Ontario, brings a blend of size and physicality, having logged 98 NHL-affiliated games and 173 penalty minutes across three AHL seasons.
The agreement was finalized after the Wild’s general manager Bill Guerin confirmed the move, noting that Schmidt’s experience in the American Hockey League makes him a valuable depth option.
Last season, Schmidt appeared in 19 games for the Iowa Wild, contributing two assists while accumulating 34 penalty minutes, and he finished the campaign with a career-high 94 penalty minutes across 48 AHL games.
Prior to turning professional, the defenseman posted 93 points in 179 OHL games with the Kitchener Rangers and Kingston Frontenacs, and he was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the third round of the 2021 NHL Draft.
A New Chapter for the Wild's Defensive Depth
Schmidt’s signing reflects the club’s intent to bolster its blue line without sacrificing salary cap flexibility, a strategy that aligns with the team’s broader roster construction goals.
Fans can expect to see the 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman in training camp, where he will compete for a spot on the opening night lineup.
If he earns a spot, his presence could free up more skilled players to operate in higher-risk situations, potentially improving the team’s overall defensive metrics.
Looking Ahead to the 2026-27 Season
The Wild will open the season against a familiar opponent, and Schmidt’s familiarity with the organization’s system could accelerate his integration.
With the contract in place, the team now has a clear path to evaluate his development and determine his role in the upcoming campaign.
