A New Chapter for Winthrop Basketball
Winthrop University has named Ronrico White as its newest assistant coach for the men’s basketball program, a move that underscores the Eagles’ commitment to deepening their coaching expertise.
White arrives after a distinguished coaching trajectory that spans the SEC, the Ohio Valley Conference and the Big South, where he helped Gardner‑Webb capture the conference championship in the 2018‑19 season. His experience also includes stints at Tennessee Tech and a reputation for producing professional talent, with more than 25 of his former players signing contracts to play overseas or in developmental leagues.
From Player to Coach
Before stepping onto the sidelines, White distinguished himself as a standout guard at the University of Tennessee‑Chattanooga, where he ranked 14th on the program’s all‑time scoring list. He hails from a basketball‑rich family; his father, Tony White, was an All‑America guard and a 1987 NBA Draft selection by the Chicago Bulls, while his brother, Tony White Jr., excelled as a point guard at the College of Charleston.
White’s professional network extends beyond the collegiate ranks. He has cultivated relationships with former players who have transitioned to pro basketball, leveraging those connections to open pathways for current athletes. His background also includes mentorship under established coaches such as Mark Prosser, Chuck Rey and others, experiences that shape his approach to player development.
The university’s athletic director highlighted White’s blend of on‑court acumen and recruiting savvy as a perfect fit for Winthrop’s ambitions. “We’re excited to bring a coach with proven success in high‑stakes conferences and a track record of elevating talent,” the director said. With the new staff in place, Winthrop looks to build on recent momentum and contend for conference titles in the coming seasons.
