Ronrico White Returns to the South as Winthrop’s New Assistant Coach
Winthrop University announced this week that Ronrico White will join its basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing a résumé that spans the SEC, the OVC, the Big South and Division III. The announcement came during a press conference in Rock Hill, where university officials praised the coach’s blend of playing experience and player development.
White’s coaching journey began in earnest at Tennessee Tech, where he helped shape a program that later transitioned to Gardner‑Webb. At the North Carolina school he guided the team to its first Big South men’s basketball championship in the 2018‑19 season, a victory that earned the program an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The run was fueled by a defensive scheme that emphasized pressure and transition, a hallmark of White’s teams.
Beyond conference titles, White has mentored more than two dozen players who have gone on to professional careers, including NBA G League standouts Will Baker and Tevin Brown, as well as European league regulars such as Jordan Wright and Nate Johnson. His ability to translate college talent into marketable prospects has made him a sought‑after recruiter.
Family ties run deep in the White lineage. His father, Tony White, was an All‑America guard who earned a spot in the NBA Draft, while his older brother, Tony White Jr., starred at the College of Charleston before carving out a brief professional stint. Growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee, Ronrico absorbed the game from the driveway of a basketball‑loving household.
University President Dr. Bill L. McCoy highlighted the hire as a strategic move that aligns with Winthrop’s ambition to compete at the highest level of the Big South. ‘Coach White’s track record of developing winners is exactly what our program needs as we look to the future,’ McCoy said.
Marking his return to the Southeast, White will work alongside head coach Mark Prosser, who has been building a culture of relentless effort. Together, they hope to translate the coach’s proven development methods into consistent winning seasons for the Eagles.
