The Roscommon School District announced that it will not field a varsity football team for the 2026 season, a decision driven by a shortage of players that left the district with only a junior varsity squad.
A Season Cut Short
Just weeks earlier, the Cheboygan Chiefs, a longtime rival in the northern Michigan football circuit, also voted to cancel its varsity schedule, marking the second program in the region to suspend top‑level play this year.
Both cancellations reverberate through the Highland Conference and the newly formed Northern Shores Conference, where member schools had built their calendars around a full slate of varsity matchups.
With open dates looming, coaches and athletic directors are scrambling to locate suitable opponents, ranging from nearby community teams to charter schools, in hopes of preserving competitive balance and maintaining fan interest.
The moves underscore a broader trend of declining participation in high school football across rural districts, a pattern that officials say could reshape the athletic landscape for years to come.
