A season of rebuilding
The Knights finished the 2025 campaign without a single win, slipping to the bottom of the North Central League II and missing the playoffs. A combination of injuries and a roster that shrunk to just nine available players the previous year left the team depleted and unable to mount any sustained offense.
This summer marked a turning point. The program added a new weight room to the gymnasium after the merger with Roseland Collegiate Prep, and the offseason saw participation jump to 18 athletes, up from nine the year before. The increased numbers have brought a noticeable lift in morale and a broader base of talent to work with.
Head coach DeJuan Miggins, who took the helm to steer the rebuilding effort, emphasizes a foundation‑first philosophy. He points to the upgraded facilities and the return of several key players as cornerstones of the new direction, noting that the team will lean on experience while integrating fresh strategic concepts.
Key players stepping up
Giovanni Hernandez, a senior who has been with the program all four years, will anchor the offensive line and also serve as a fullback, becoming only the second player in Roseland University Prep history to complete a four‑year varsity run. Junior Jose Orozco, previously a running back, has been moved to quarterback, giving the offense a new play‑calling presence. Meanwhile, sophomore Zaiden Provence‑Mize, standing 6‑foot‑3, will see action at running back, defensive end and safety, adding versatility on both sides of the ball.
These returning athletes are expected to stabilize a unit that struggled with predictability a year ago. By diversifying the passing attack and tightening defensive assignments, the coaching staff hopes to erase the single‑dimensional tendencies that opponents exploited during the winless stretch.
The schedule still features traditional rivalries with Elsie Allen and Tomales, with road trips to both schools on the horizon. The coaching staff, many of whom are Tomales alumni, view those matchups as pivotal moments to gauge progress early in the season, aiming to show improvement by the third game and build momentum for the remainder of the campaign.
