Delaware’s Office of Highway Safety announced a new partnership with NASCAR driver Ross Chastain, aiming to curb dangerous driving habits across the state.
The collaboration, unveiled at the Delaware State Fair, centers on the “Use Your Melon” campaign, a public‑service initiative that challenges motorists to think twice before getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.
The ‘Use Your Melon’ Message
During a brief interview on the fairgrounds, Chastain described the personal responsibility that comes with operating a vehicle, stressing that a single poor decision can have life‑changing consequences for families and communities.
Enforcement Numbers Reflect a Growing Concern
Law‑enforcement officials highlighted the scale of the problem, noting that more than 4,400 arrests and citations related to impaired driving have been recorded in Delaware this year alone.
The campaign will roll out a series of radio spots, social‑media graphics and roadside signage, all bearing the distinctive melon‑themed branding intended to make the message memorable.
Chastain, who has been a vocal advocate for traffic safety, expressed optimism that the visibility of a well‑known driver could inspire motorists to adopt safer habits, especially during the summer travel season.
The Delaware Office of Highway Safety hopes the combined effort will reduce the number of traffic collisions and reinforce the message that every driver has a role in protecting fellow road users.
