At Naval Station Rota, Spain, a $15,000 renovation has refreshed the base’s basketball courts, replacing worn equipment and installing a new playing surface.
The project was executed by the base’s Public Works Department in coordination with NAVFAC EURAFCENT, and it forms part of a larger $500,000 initiative to replace barracks flooring with modern tiling. Both upgrades are financed through the Barracks Task Force under the One Big Beautiful Bill, a component of the broader Sailors First program aimed at improving quality‑of‑life standards for service members.
Capt. Andrew Olsen and Capt. Charles Chmielak, senior leaders at the installation, emphasized that these improvements do more than spruce up facilities; they boost morale, readiness, and the overall well‑being of sailors stationed in the Mediterranean.
Strategically positioned at the gateway to the Mediterranean, Naval Station Rota supports U.S. Naval Forces Europe‑Africa and the U.S. 6th Fleet, enabling maritime security and logistics operations that are vital to NATO and allied missions.
