Kansas City’s city council has given the green light to a $600 million funding package that will help finance a $1.9 billion stadium for the Kansas City Royals, the centerpiece of a $3 billion mixed‑use development planned for the downtown riverfront.
Under the agreement, the Royals will shoulder $760 million of the construction cost, while state officials are pursuing an additional $540 million in financing. If all goes as planned, groundbreaking could begin in 2027, with the ballpark ready for the 2030 season, marking the first time a Major League Baseball team has set up shop in the heart of the city.
A New Era for Downtown Baseball
The commitment extends beyond the stadium itself. The team has pledged a 30‑year lease at the new venue and will contribute more than $50 million to local community initiatives, while Hallmark Cards plans to erect a new headquarters nearby, linked to the Power & Light District via a streetcar line. The T‑Mobile Center will anchor the surrounding area, creating a hub that blends entertainment, retail and residential space.
