Rueben Chinyelu, the 2025‑26 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year, announced that he will again wear the orange and blue for the University of Florida, a decision first reported by Andy Katz.
A Defensive Anchor’s Decision
The 6‑foot‑9 senior weighed the prospect of entering the NBA draft, but after consulting with coaches and family he chose to preserve his college eligibility, keeping a cornerstone of the Gators’ defense in Gainesville.
In the previous campaign he posted a double‑double average of 10.9 points and 11.2 rebounds, becoming the first Florida Gator in five decades to reach double‑digit rebounds per game and setting a program record with 19 double‑double performances.
Building on a Championship Foundation
Florida enters the new season with four returning starters, among them Alex Condon, Boogie Fland and Thomas Haugh, who were integral to the 2024‑25 national championship run. Their presence provides continuity and a strong defensive identity.
The only unresolved piece is the fifth starter, Denzel Aberdeen, who transferred from Kentucky before re‑entering the portal and now hopes to secure a spot in the lineup.
Coach Andy Katz, who has been tracking the team’s progress, noted that the Gators are poised to blend youthful talent with seasoned leadership as they aim for another deep tournament run.
