Rufus Alexander Set to Lead Defense at Mount St. Mary's
Rufus Alexander, a standout linebacker who earned three‑time All‑Big 12 honors and was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, is returning to the Oklahoma football ecosystem in a new capacity. Starting in the 2026 season, he will serve as the defensive coordinator at Mount St. Mary's High School in Oklahoma City, where he will guide a unit that already boasts several former Sooners on its staff.
Alexander’s appointment comes as the university’s flagship program undertakes a sweeping overhaul of its coaching and support personnel. The moves follow a season that saw the Sooners finish with a robust roster of 67 returning players and 43 newcomers, a depth that head coach Brent Venables hopes will translate into a competitive edge.
The reshuffling includes a series of promotions and lateral moves within the strength and conditioning department. Jerry Schmidt, previously the strength and conditioning coach, has transitioned to an Elite Performance Liaison role, while James Dobson steps in as Director of Sports Enhancement and Strength and Conditioning. These changes reflect a strategic shift toward integrated performance management.
A New Era for the Sooners Coaching Staff
Beyond the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners have added a cadre of analysts and assistants. Aaron Cheatwood, DeShawn Williams and Stephen Copeland have been brought on as new analysts, while former players such as Jason Witten, LaMar Morgan and Deland McCullough have joined the coaching mix. The staff also welcomes former quarterback Josh Norman in a senior role focused on mission development.
The ripple effects extend beyond the university grounds. Alumni and former teammates have taken note of the coordinated effort, which includes the hiring of Molly Jacoby as Director of Recruiting and the elevation of Kevin Wilson, John Kuceyeski and Xavier Brewer to expanded responsibilities. Together, these moves signal a comprehensive attempt to sustain momentum as the program looks ahead to the 2026 campaign.
With a blend of seasoned veterans and fresh talent, the Sooners are poised to capitalize on the experience gained over the past year. The infusion of former players into coaching roles not only enriches the tactical palette but also reinforces a culture of continuity and institutional knowledge.
