The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has maintained its prohibition on the Russian national team, yet it has carved out an exception for the upcoming Winter Universiade in China. Russian athletes will be allowed to take part under a neutral designation, marking a rare opportunity for the country’s junior hockey players.
The arrangement is made possible through the jurisdiction of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), which organizes the multi‑sport event alongside Chinese hosts. By stepping outside the IIHF’s regulatory sphere, the Russian contingent can bypass the usual eligibility restrictions that have kept the country out of most international competitions since 2022.
Mikhail Degtyaryov, Russia’s Sports Minister, confirmed that the team will indeed travel to China and compete without national symbols. His statement underscores the government’s willingness to support athletes while respecting the neutral‑status framework that FISU has put in place.
Russia’s history at student‑level tournaments adds weight to the anticipation. The nation has entered nine such competitions, returning with seven gold medals and two silvers, a record that fuels optimism about a strong showing in China.
