Rutgers University’s men’s basketball team is set to open its 2026‑27 season against Houston on November 17, 2026, in the opening round of the Players Era Tournament.
A New Era for College Basketball
The tournament has expanded to 24 teams, divided into two brackets – a 16‑team field and an eight‑team field known as the Players Era 8. In that eight‑team bracket, Rutgers will face Houston, while other first‑round pairings include Florida versus Notre Dame, West Virginia against Auburn, and Kansas taking on UNLV.
The second round will be shaped by those results, and the following week the 16‑team bracket will begin, offering additional matchups as the field narrows.
Rutgers and Houston previously met in the 2021 round of 32, a game that Houston won 63‑60 after Rutgers led by three points at halftime. This time the Scarlet Knights hope to change the narrative.
Analyst Jon Rothstein has pointed out that the expanded tournament reflects a growing effort to give mid‑major programs a larger stage, and he expects the Rutgers‑Houston clash to be a marquee early‑season test.
