Rutgers University announced the commitment of former Temple defensive lineman Sekou Kromah to join the Scarlet Knights for the 2026 season, a move aimed at reinforcing a unit that struggled mightily in the previous year. The announcement comes as the program seeks to bounce back from a 2025 campaign that left the defense ranked among the nation’s weakest in both run defense and pass rush.
A Strategic Reinforcement
Kromah, a 6‑foot‑3, 280‑pound athlete from New Jersey, spent two seasons at Temple before a stint at Monroe College (JUCO). Despite missing five games due to shoulder and oblique injuries, he managed 14 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks in just seven appearances, showcasing versatility by lining up at both edge and defensive tackle. His most impressive performance arrived against Oklahoma, where he posted seven tackles, 2.5 for loss, a sack and a pass breakup.
Rebuilding the Front
The Scarlet Knights did not stop with Kromah. The team added four more defensive linemen through the transfer portal: Rondo Porter from Appalachian State, Jaedin Lee from Maine, Malachi Davis from Toledo and J’Dan Burnett from Tulsa. Collectively, the newcomers are expected to inject experience and depth into a line that allowed 6.8 yards per rush and recorded only seven sacks the previous season. The influx of talent is viewed as a direct response to the defensive shortcomings that plagued the 2025 schedule.
Coaches and analysts alike see the roster moves as a calculated effort to reshape a unit that had been thin on both size and production. By blending proven collegiate experience with high‑school standouts — Kromah was a three‑star recruit who tallied 90 tackles and nine sacks in high school — Rutgers hopes to elevate its defensive identity and compete more effectively in the upcoming season.
