A Quarterback Competition Takes Shape
Rutgers University is still searching for a definitive answer at quarterback as the Scarlet Knights gear up for the upcoming season. Coach Greg Schiano has repeatedly emphasized that no starter has been named, leaving the position open for competition during the next few weeks.
Two names dominate the conversation: Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan and returning senior AJ Surace. Both have impressed Schiano with their performances in spring drills, showcasing distinct skill sets that could shape the offense.
Spring Practice Highlights
Lonergan, who spent two seasons at Boston College after arriving from Alabama as a Nick Saban recruit, posted a 66.9% completion rate last year, throwing for 2,025 yards and 12 touchdowns. Surace, now in his third year with the program, has embraced the challenge of battling Lonergan for the starting role.
A third candidate, Sean Ashenfelter, has quietly made strides that have not gone unnoticed. Though his path to the top spot remains longer, coaches view him as a potential quarterback of the future for Rutgers.
Training Camp as the Deciding Factor
With training camp looming — roughly six weeks away — the coaching staff expects the battle to intensify. The eventual starter will be decided on the practice field, where repetitions and decision‑making under pressure will be scrutinized.
The competition is not just about raw talent; it also reflects a culture of camaraderie within the quarterback room. Schiano has praised the group for their competitive yet supportive dynamic, noting that each player pushes the others to elevate their game.
The season will open on September 3 against UMass, a game that will serve as the first real test of whatever decision is made. Until then, the Scarlet Knights remain focused on refining their offense and building chemistry.
