Rutgers University’s football program has turned to the transfer portal to address a defense that underperformed last season, welcoming defensive end Malachi Davis and linebacker Ty Morris.
Spring Practice Impressions
Head coach Greg Schiano highlighted the energy both newcomers brought during the recent spring sessions, noting their ability to disrupt opposing offenses.
Davis arrived from Toledo University after a season in which he recorded 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks, figures that caught Schiano’s attention.
Morris, who spent his final year at Rice University as team captain, posted 88 tackles and 2.5 sacks, and his leadership qualities have already begun to shape the unit.
The Scarlet Knights lost key contributors Bradley Weaver and Eric O’Neill to graduation, as well as Jordan Walker, who transferred to Georgia Tech, leaving a noticeable gap at defensive end and linebacker.
Building Cohesion
Schiano emphasized that chemistry will be essential, pointing to the guidance of defensive coordinator Travis Johansen as a stabilizing force.
With the Big Ten schedule looming, the new-look defense hopes to improve upon the conference’s second‑to‑last sack total of 11, aiming for a more aggressive pass rush.
The coaching staff believes the additions of Davis and Morris, combined with the experience of returning players, could finally give the Scarlet Knights the depth they need.
