A Strategic Offseason Overhaul
Rutgers University’s men’s basketball program has completed a sweeping reconstruction of its 2026‑27 roster, culminating in the addition of Congolese forward Mervedi Miteo. The 6‑10, 260‑pound prospect arrives after a stint with Gran Canaria in Spain’s top league and a notable performance at the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament, where he posted 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Coach Steve Pikiell described Miteo as a skilled big man with a high ceiling, emphasizing that his versatility should help shore up the Scarlet Knights’ interior.
The offseason has been marked by a flurry of transfers and international signings. Alongside Miteo, the team welcomes Slovenian forward Martin Tonejc, who averaged 17.7 points and 9.7 rebounds in the Adriatic Junior ABA League, and Italian guard‑forward Diego Garavaglia, a veteran of several FIBA junior competitions. Both players join a group that also features New York guard Imahri Wooten, the latest addition from the 2026 recruiting class.
Returning star Tariq Francis remains the centerpiece of the squad. In his most recent season he led the team with 17 points per game and set program records with 578 total points and 164 made free throws. Coach Pikiell has built the new roster around Francis’s playmaking ability, hoping the combination of his experience and the new talent will translate into a competitive edge in the upcoming Big Ten schedule.
The incoming class also includes experienced transfers who bring proven production. Darin Smith Jr., the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, averaged 20.7 points and 5.4 rebounds last season, while Rasheed Jones contributed 14.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists after moving from Coastal Carolina. Will Sydnor, a former Manhattan standout and MAAC Rookie of the Year, adds further depth at the guard position.
Veteran big men Christian Gurdak and Dorin Buca are expected to provide additional interior presence, complementing the newly signed forwards. Their contributions will be crucial as the team integrates multiple newcomers into a cohesive unit.
The departure of eight players, including Dylan Grant, Chris Nwuli and Baye Fall, clears cap space and opens opportunities for fresh faces. With the roster now set, the Scarlet Knights will focus on chemistry building and preparation for the rigors of Big Ten competition later this year.
