The university announced the hiring this week, highlighting his extensive background in player development and his proven ability to elevate team performance.
A Coaching Journey
Before arriving in West Texas, Van Amburg spent five seasons at Hillsdale College, where he served as assistant coach and later associate head coach and recruiting coordinator. During his tenure, the program set a school record for single‑season fielding percentage three times in four years, underscoring his defensive expertise.
Reviving the Falcons
At UT‑Permian Basin, the Falcons aim to rebound from a difficult season. Van Amburg brings a reputation for cultivating power hitters and tightening infield defense, skills he honed while coaching at Limestone University and DeAnza Junior College.
From Player to Coach
Van Amburg’s baseball journey began at Division I Pepperdine, where he played collegiately before transitioning to coaching. He later spent six seasons at Limestone University, serving as infield coach, hitting coach, and recruiting coordinator, and previously worked as a hitting coach at DeAnza Junior College in Cupertino, California.
His diverse coaching experience equips him to address both the offensive and defensive needs of the Falcons. As he steps into his new role, Van Amburg is expected to leverage his developmental focus to rebuild the program’s competitiveness and restore confidence among players and fans.
