A Unique Path to the NHL
Ryder Cali was born in Lugano, Switzerland, to Fiona Mcleod, a former professional hockey player who was already making a name for herself on the European circuit.
At three years old his family relocated to the Cayman Islands, where the lack of indoor ice forced the youngster to hone his skills on roller rinks, a setting that would later earn him the moniker ‘Cayman Kid’.
Four years later the family moved to Canada, settling in a hockey‑rich environment where his mother transitioned into coaching and became his primary on‑ice mentor.
The shift from roller to ice presented a steep learning curve, especially mastering the art of stopping, but Cali’s adaptability allowed him to quickly integrate into junior programs.
His breakout came with the Markham Majors of the GTHL, where his offensive surge earned him a spot in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, though he ultimately chose the OJHL’s Milton Menace, logging 54 points in 51 games.
A subsequent season with the North Bay Battalion saw him finish sixth in league scoring with 36 points in 47 games, drawing praise for his aggressive, two‑way style.
In the 2026 NHL Draft the Florida Panthers selected him in the second round, 48th overall, fulfilling a lifelong dream and marking the culmination of a trans‑continental journey.
Cali describes himself as a ‘200‑foot player,’ emphasizing that scoring is only part of his contribution; shutting down opponents is equally important.
He will begin the next chapter at Providence College, where he plans to attend his first Panthers development camp in Florida, while also looking forward to reuniting with teammate Shemar Moses, a 2025 fifth‑round pick.
Off the ice, Cali credits his mother’s early influence for instilling a team‑first mentality, a value that now guides his approach as he aims to climb the professional ranks.
