When former Alabama head coach Nick Saban sat down for a recent conversation, the topic quickly turned to the new direction of the LSU Tigers football program.
Saban, who spent three seasons working alongside Lane Kiffin from 2014 to 2016, offered a rare glimpse of admiration for the coach’s approach to building a competitive squad.
Building a deep roster
According to Saban, Kiffin’s first year in Baton Rouge has already been marked by a massive overhaul of the roster, with the program bringing in 59 players through the transfer portal while also locking in several of its own star athletes.
That kind of activity, Saban said, creates a depth that can withstand the grind of a long season and gives the team the flexibility to adjust mid‑year.

Saban highlighted the intangible assets that LSU brings to the table, including a passionate fan base and strong administrative backing.
Managing expectations
He noted that those elements, combined with the existing talent, give the Tigers a realistic shot at breaking into the College Football Playoff.
Saban also pointed out that Kiffin’s track record of success at previous stops suggests he knows how to translate such resources into wins.
While the expectations in Louisiana are sky‑high, Saban believes the new coaching staff is well‑equipped to meet the pressure.
