The Indian men's hockey squad's recent shift from its iconic blue kit to a saffron jersey has sparked a political row that extends beyond the sports arena.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge denounced the change, calling it a narrow‑minded political experiment that disregards the deep‑rooted sentiments of millions of fans who have long associated the team with the colour blue.
Hockey India responded by stating that the saffron hue is meant to embody courage, sacrifice and victory, and that the design was finalised after extensive consultations with players and support staff.
The new kit was unveiled on July 27 and will make its competitive debut at the World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, which begins on August 15.
Kharge further criticised the government for meddling in national symbols, pointing to alterations in road pavements, parliamentary dress codes and the Doordarshan logo as part of a broader pattern he described as ideological imprinting.
Political undercurrents
The controversy also raises questions about the preservation of historic identities, as the team has long been recognised internationally as the "Men in Blue", "The Blues" and "The Blue Tigers".
While the government and Hockey India argue that the colour change celebrates national pride, opponents contend that sporting symbols should remain insulated from partisan agendas.
