Summer Camps Bring Youth Together
Saginaw Valley State University is opening its doors this July for a series of basketball camps designed for children from kindergarten through fifth grade and for teenagers in sixth through twelfth grade. The sessions will take place on the university’s campus in Saginaw, leveraging the Great Lakes Bay region’s growing sports infrastructure.
Coach Chris Fowler, who leads the SVSU men’s basketball program, says the initiative is about more than just drills and scrimmages. “Our goal is to connect with the community and foster a sense of togetherness,” he explained, emphasizing the university’s commitment to youth development beyond the classroom.
A Coach’s Vision for Connection
Fowler highlighted the importance of reaching out to families across the region, noting that the camps provide a platform for young athletes to interact with mentors who model teamwork and sportsmanship. By bringing together kids from diverse backgrounds, the program aims to build lasting relationships that extend into other areas of community life.
The curriculum blends skill development with character education, encouraging participants to practice respect, perseverance, and collaboration. University staff and student volunteers will supervise each session, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all attendees.
Beyond the hardwood, the camps serve as a conduit for SVSU to showcase its resources and academic programs to prospective students. Administrators hope the early exposure will inspire future enrollment and deepen ties between the university and the surrounding neighborhoods.
Local parents have expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, citing the chance for their children to stay active during the summer while learning valuable life lessons. Organizers say the response has been strong, prompting plans to expand the offering in coming years.
