The Saguaro High School football program announced the cancellation of its varsity contest against Chaparral, citing safety concerns tied to an insufficient number of healthy athletes.
Roster Crisis Triggers Cancellation
After a coaching transition earlier this spring, the team saw 35 players depart, leaving only 33 on the roster; freshman and junior‑varsity squads were also suspended, and several freshmen were thrust into the varsity lineup.
Coach Butch Goncharoff, who inherited just 14 players when he took over, confirmed the decision alongside athletic directors Stephen Cervantez, David Abrams and Trace Carroll, who all emphasized that the move was driven by health and availability rather than a full season shutdown.
The week off will be used to treat injuries and allow the remaining squad to regroup, with the team slated to return to action on September 10 against Queen Creek, a matchup that will take place in Queen Creek, Arizona.
Chaparral Seeks New Opponent
Chaparral, left without a scheduled opponent, is working with the Arizona Interscholastic Association to secure a replacement game, underscoring the ripple effects across the local football landscape.
Despite the setback, officials say the overall season schedule remains on track, and the school hopes the pause will translate into a stronger, healthier lineup for the remainder of the campaign.
