A New Chapter for Salem Basketball
Kevin Garst, who spent nearly two decades at the helm of Salem High School’s basketball program, announced his retirement this week, ending a tenure that produced 263 victories and a state championship as both player and coach.
His successor, Adam Rutledge, arrives after a three‑year stint leading the Andrew Lewis Middle School team, a program that went undefeated in the 2023‑24 season and earned a reputation for disciplined, hard‑working play.
Rutledge, a 1999 state championship starter for the Spartans, brings not only playing experience but also a business administration degree from Roanoke College, and he will continue to teach in the school’s business department.
The Salem School Board formally approved Rutledge’s appointment on May 22, citing his deep roots in the community, his mentorship under longtime coach Charlie Morgan, and his proven ability to develop talent.
Garst, who will remain on staff as a business teacher, praised Rutledge’s dedication and expressed confidence that the new coach will uphold the program’s tradition of excellence.
Community members and parents alike have voiced optimism, noting that Rutledge’s blend of athletic acumen and instructional experience should keep the Spartans competitive in the upcoming season.
