Indiana’s men’s basketball program received a major boost when Sam Alexis announced he will return for the 2026-27 campaign after a court injunction granted him a fifth year of eligibility.
The forward confirmed his decision on Instagram, writing, “Let’s do it again Hoosier Nation 🔥,” a message that quickly resonated with fans and teammates alike.
A Strategic Reinforcement for Indiana
His return comes at a time when the Hoosiers were looking to plug gaps in the frontcourt. Alongside Alexis, the team added University of Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell and Southern Methodist University transfer Samet Yigitoglu during the offseason, both of whom bring size and experience to the paint.
Alexis’ statistical footprint is already well known. In the 2025-26 season he appeared in all 32 games, starting the final 23, and posted averages of 8.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while setting Indiana’s single‑season field‑goal‑percentage record at 68.7%.
The roster now stands at 13 scholarship players, a depth that contrasts sharply with the previous year’s bench production.
Addressing Last Season’s Gaps
Indiana’s bench scored only 19.7 points per game in 2025-26, and reserves managed just 12.6 points over the final 10 contests, contributing to just 18% of the team’s offensive output.
The rotation also suffered from a lack of size; only two players saw time at center, forcing perimeter‑oriented athletes such as Tucker DeVries and Nick Dorn to fill power‑forward roles.
With Alexis, Sherrell and Yigitoglu now available, the Hoosiers hope to bring a more balanced mix of height, experience and depth to a loaded Big Ten schedule, positioning themselves as a stronger contender in the conference.
