Early Life and College Years
Samuel "Sam" Bishop was born in Riverside, New Jersey, to the late Earl and Katherine Bishop. He grew up in a close‑knit family and quickly emerged as a two‑sport standout at Campbell University, where he lettered in baseball and basketball from 1961 through 1964.
Under the guidance of Coach Fred McCall on the hardwood and Coach Hargrove Davis on the diamond, Bishop helped lead the Camels to their final junior‑college state championship in 1961. He became known for averaging double‑figure points and rebounds, and he is credited with delivering the first dunk in Camel history. As a freshman pitcher, he tossed a no‑hitter against North Carolina Wesleyan and struck out 24 batters, a performance that foreshadowed a promising baseball career.
Professional Baseball and Lifelong Service
After graduating, Bishop signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and spent two seasons in their minor‑league system. He worked under manager Sparky Anderson, who later guided the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers to World Series titles. Off the field, Bishop devoted four decades to Hoeganaes Corp., where he rose through the ranks while remaining an avid golfer and a regular presence at local sporting events.
His commitment to youth sports extended beyond campus; he coached numerous community teams, most notably the Holy Cross girls’ basketball squad, and remained a passionate fan of Philadelphia’s professional teams and Notre Dame football. His roommate at Rock Hill, future Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton, often recalled Bishop’s competitive spirit and camaraderie.
Family, Legacy and Community Impact
Sam Bishop is survived by his devoted wife of more than six decades, Marilyn Pine, and their children, Colleen Anninos and Bill Bishop, as well as his grandchildren Samantha Miller, Nicholas Anninos, Audrey Bishop and Andrew Bishop. He also leaves behind his brother Neil Bishop, great‑grandchildren Rory and Beau Miller, and a wide circle of nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends and colleagues remember him as a mentor who helped bridge Campbell’s transition from junior to senior college status, a role he embraced with quiet leadership. Tributes highlight his ability to inspire players, his generosity in giving back to the community, and his unwavering faith, which was nurtured at Sacred Heart Church in Riverton, New Jersey.
