Sam Brown has stepped into the role of head coach for the St. Joseph’s field hockey team, inheriting a program that has long been a benchmark in the Atlantic‑10 conference. His appointment comes as the university looks to blend tradition with fresh tactical ideas.
A Global Coaching résumé
Before arriving in Philadelphia, Brown spent years shaping teams across continents. He served as an associate head coach at Syracuse under Lynn Farquhar, where he helped guide both the men’s and women’s squads. His overseas experience includes stints in New Zealand, England and Chile, as well as a period as head coach of the U.S. under‑18 boys’ team in 2021 and an assistant role with the under‑22 women’s side in 2022.
Brown’s coaching philosophy centers on relationship building. He emphasizes creating a supportive environment where each player feels valued, a strategy he says is essential for sustaining the program’s competitive edge.
Looking Ahead
Drawing on his international background, Brown intends to weave creative tactics into the team’s playbook while preserving the aggressive style that has kept St. Joseph’s at the top of the A‑10. He believes that the cross‑cultural perspectives he brings can open new avenues for development and recruitment. The coming season will test how effectively Brown can translate his global insights into on‑field success, with a roster poised to build on recent achievements and keep the program’s momentum alive.
