Sam Houston State University is grieving the sudden death of defensive back William Davis, who was found dead at the age of 22 earlier this month.
Davis had joined the Bearkats after spending three seasons at Virginia Union University, where he honed his skills on the defensive line before making the move to Texas.
Coach Phil Longo, who has led the program for several years, described Davis as a beloved and passionate member of the team, noting that his presence will be deeply missed both on and off the field.
The young athlete arrived on campus in April, participating in spring workouts and expressing genuine excitement about the next chapter of his football journey.
Honoring a Legacy
Though the exact cause of Davis’s passing has not been released, the university has announced plans to commemorate his contributions during the 2026 season, a tribute that will be woven into upcoming games and fan experiences.
The upcoming memorial reflects the close‑knit nature of the SHSU community, which rallied around Davis when he first arrived, telling teammates that the school felt like home.
Fans and alumni alike have taken to social media to share memories, highlighting his relentless work ethic and the infectious enthusiasm he brought to every practice.
