The Ole Miss community is grieving the loss of Sam Schulz, a 22‑year‑old fan whose battle with epidermolysis bullosa ended on August 12, 2024. Known as the butterfly disease, his condition left up to 90 % of his body as open wounds, yet his spirit never wavered.
Despite the constant pain and limited mobility that confined him to a wheelchair, Schulz remained an avid basketball enthusiast. His resilience turned every game into a personal rallying cry, drawing the attention of players, coaches and fans alike.
The first encounter between Schulz and Coach Chris Beard occurred during a 2024 matchup at Kentucky. Beard noticed the young fan’s infectious enthusiasm and, after a brief conversation, felt an immediate connection.
A Friendship That Transcended the Game
Beard soon invited Schulz’s family to a team dinner, upgraded their seats and cultivated a bond that went far beyond the hardwood. The gesture cemented a relationship built on mutual respect and genuine affection.
The friendship rippled through the roster, with former Rebels players such as Jaemyn Brakefield, Jaylen Murray and Sean Pedulla often citing Schulz’s encyclopedic sports knowledge and keen sneaker sensibility as a source of inspiration.
During Ole Miss’s 2025 NCAA Sweet 16 campaign, Schulz’s story served as a quiet mantra for the team. In moments of fatigue or doubt, players recalled his unwavering resolve, reminding them that the fight they waged on the court mirrored the battle he faced daily.
After Schulz’s passing, Beard took to X to share a heartfelt tribute, celebrating the fan’s life, his impact on the program and the indelible mark he left on everyone who knew him.
