Opening Victory Sets the Tone
The Samford Bulldogs kicked off the Southern Conference Tournament with a commanding 13-1 victory over UNC Greensboro, a performance that underscored their offensive firepower and pitching depth.
Samford exploded for six runs in the first three innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from Trey Higgins that opened the scoring. The Bulldogs continued to press, adding two more runs in the second and a solo shot from Gus Gandy in the third to build a 6-0 lead.
The offensive onslaught didn’t stop there. In the bottom of the fifth, Samford plated seven additional runs, sparked by a solo homer from Higgins and extended through a series of timely hits that included a grand slam by Luke Boykin, sealing a 13-1 final margin.
Pitching was equally effective. Joseph Lee tossed six innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out seven batters, and Will Andre closed out the game with a shutout ninth inning, giving up only a single hit.
Offensive contributors were spread throughout the lineup. In addition to Higgins and Boykin, Eddie Marshall and Cade Carr each added solo homers, while Pierce Dutton and Gus Gandy contributed key doubles and RBIs that kept the momentum rolling.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the winner’s bracket, where they will face Western Carolina on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT. Fans can catch the action live on ESPN+, ensuring broad coverage of what promises to be another exciting matchup.
