During a recent practice the team ran drills to the rhythm of 1990s hip‑hop while the thermometer hovered in the mid‑80s, a setting that coach Scott White says helps simulate game‑day intensity.
Special teams have been a focal point, with every kick, punt and return evaluated under a microscope as the staff looks to eliminate last season’s inconsistencies.
Defensive Identity
The linebacker unit that dominated the 2025 campaign returns with four sacks, 13 tackles for loss and two interceptions, a performance that earned the group national attention.
New linebackers coach Scott White, a Southern California native who previously coached at UCLA, is tasked with preserving that excellence while giving younger players a chance to prove themselves.
Leadership and Depth
Among the leaders is senior linebacker Tano Letuli, who became only the third Aztec to captain a top‑25 defense three times, a feat last achieved by Kevin O’Connell in 2025.
Letuli’s accolades include all‑MW honorable‑mention honors for two consecutive years, a spot on the Polynesian Player of the Year watch list and recognition on the Pac‑12 Preseason Impact List.
Joining him is Sione Hala, a transfer from Weber State and Boston College whose 64 tackles and one interception last season have already earned him a leadership role on the defense.
