A sweeping realignment is set to take effect for the 2026 high school football campaigns across the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding areas. Administrators say the shift is driven by a desire to pair schools with similar competitive histories, a strategy they call competitive‑equity.
Competitive‑Equity Model Takes Shape
Under the new framework, the Foothill Area will dissolve its traditional divisions and instead create three football‑specific leagues — Arroyo, Boulder and Crest — each populated by teams that finished at comparable levels in the previous season. The Arroyo League will bring together Muir, Monrovia, La Canada and Burbank, while the Boulder League will showcase Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino and Gabrielino. Arcadia and Temple City will share the Crest League.
In the Mt. SAC region, the realignment produces its own ripple effects. Northview, after a stint in the Valle Vista League, is slated to join the Sierra League, where it will sit alongside Charter Oak, Glendora, Bonita, Ayala and Colony. The move reflects a broader effort to group schools that have historically posted similar win‑loss records.
Additional leagues are emerging across the map. The Gateway League will welcome La Serna alongside traditional powerhouses such as La Mirada, Downey and Warren. Meanwhile, the Hacienda League will feature Baldwin Park, Covina, Diamond Bar, Los Altos, South Hills and West Covina. Other new divisions, including the Metro, Alliance, Conference 12, Baseline and Miramonte leagues, will spread teams from the Foothill and Mt. SAC zones throughout the season.
While the restructuring promises more balanced matchups, it also demands adaptation. Coaches must revise game plans to suit new opponents, players will need to adjust to different play styles, and fans will experience fresh rivalries. School officials say the transition will be closely monitored, with the hope that the revised leagues will produce tighter contests and a more engaging postseason picture.
