Sandelin Extends Stay with Bulldogs
Scott Sandelin, the winningest coach in University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey history, announced this week that he will remain at the helm through the 2029‑30 season, securing his legacy for another four years.
The extension comes after a 24‑15‑1 campaign in 2025‑26 that saw the Bulldogs punch their ticket to the NCAA Regional Final and finish as runners‑up in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff, a run that highlighted the team’s resilience and depth.
A Thank‑You to Leadership
Sandelin took the opportunity to thank UMD Athletic Director Forrest Karr and Chancellor Charles Nies for their unwavering support, noting that their vision has been instrumental in building a program that consistently competes at the national level.
“I’m excited to keep working with this staff and these players,” Sandelin said, emphasizing the collaborative atmosphere that has defined his tenure.
His career record now stands at 493‑423‑105, making him the program’s all‑time winningest coach with a .729 winning percentage in the NCAA Tournament, the second highest among active Division I head coaches.
Under his guidance the Bulldogs have captured three national championships, logged 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and posted 14 consecutive winning seasons, a testament to sustained excellence.
Karr praised Sandelin as “one of the most respected coaches in college hockey,” citing his ability to develop talent that has earned four Hobey Baker Memorial Award recipients, including 2026 winner Max Plante, and helped 37 players reach the NHL, three of whom have competed in the Winter Olympics.
The contract extension not only stabilizes the program’s direction but also reinforces the university’s commitment to maintaining a powerhouse in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, a narrative that resonates with fans across the United States, Minnesota and Duluth.
