A new season kicks off
Santa Maria is launching a Youth NFL FLAG Football League designed for children between the ages of 8 and 14. The program features coed divisions and follows a 5‑on‑5 format that uses hip‑mounted flags instead of tackling, providing a safe yet competitive environment for young athletes.
The league will run for six Saturdays, beginning on October 10 and concluding on November 14. Games are scheduled for morning slots at Maramonte Park, giving families a convenient weekend activity that blends recreation with community spirit.
Participation carries a modest fee: $42 for residents of the city and $53 for non‑residents. Each player receives an official NFL FLAG jersey, a mouthguard and a flag belt as part of the standard equipment package, ensuring a professional look and feel on the field.
Organizers are actively recruiting volunteer head coaches who are at least 18 years old. Prospective coaches must apply by August 27, and those who qualify can earn a complimentary registration for one of their participating children, adding an extra incentive for community involvement.
Registration for the league is currently open, and interested families are encouraged to contact the City Recreation and Parks Department to secure a spot. With limited spaces and a focus on inclusivity, the program aims to foster a love of sport while promoting teamwork and active lifestyles among Santa Maria’s youth.
