Why the Blades Decided to Move On
The Saskatchewan Hockey League's Saskatoon Blades announced a trade that sent starting goaltender Ryley Budd to the Brandon Wheat Kings in exchange for a 2029 third-round selection and a 2027 eighth-round pick.
Budd, a Calgary native who spent the previous season posting a 4-4-1-0 record with a .888 save percentage and a 3.08 goals-against average, will now get a larger role in Manitoba's net.
The Blades explained that a deep bench of netminders made the move necessary to ensure Budd could develop without being stuck behind established starters.
In a statement, the club thanked Budd for his contributions on the ice and through his Be A Budd community program, which has been a fixture in both Saskatoon and Calgary.
The Wheat Kings welcomed the addition, noting that the young goaltender brings a proven work ethic and a track record of steady improvement that aligns with the team's long-term vision.
The draft picks acquired in the deal could prove valuable in future drafts, giving the Blades flexibility as they continue to rebuild around younger talent.
