A Historic Night in Saugatuck
The Saugatuck high school soccer team captured its first ever regional semifinal victory on Tuesday, downing St. Joseph Michigan Lutheran 5-1 in a Division 4 matchup. The win marks a watershed moment for a program that had never advanced this far.
Jordan Sanders became the hero in the dying seconds, slotting home the decisive goal after a perfectly placed corner kick from Neave Rewa. The strike not only sealed the win but also underscored the team’s composure under pressure.
Coach Neal Phillips praised the collective effort, highlighting the way the squad rallied around each other and executed the game plan. ‘This is something these kids will remember for the rest of their lives,’ he said, reflecting on the significance of the achievement.
The victory came without the need for a shootout, a contrast to earlier contests that had tested the team’s resolve. Instead, a coordinated attack led by Rewa’s set‑piece created the opening that Sanders exploited.
Looking ahead, Saugatuck will meet Kalamazoo Christian in the regional finals, a clash that promises another intense battle. The roster, featuring standouts such as Audrey Rodewald, Katie Dailey, Virginia Cernugel and Ryann Monroe, is poised to continue its surprising run.
