Saugerties High School’s baseball program celebrated a milestone this spring as Coach Mike Pugliese was crowned the 2026 Freeman Baseball Coach of the Year. Under his guidance, the Sawyers posted a 15‑6 record and captured the Mid‑Hudson Athletic League championship, ending a 15‑year title drought for the school.
The achievement was not the work of a single individual but the product of a cohesive unit that blended seasoned talent with emerging prospects. Returning standouts such as ace pitchers Ty Van Valkenburg and McCoy Rothe anchored the rotation, while sophomore catcher Michael Gramoglia proved indispensable in managing the staff’s dynamics.

Pugliese highlighted the collective effort that defined the campaign, singling out assistant coaches Jeff Riozzi and JP Gramoglia for their strategic input and player development. Their roles complemented the head coach’s vision, allowing the team to adapt mid‑season and maintain momentum.
Beyond the field, Pugliese balances his duties as Saugerties High’s psychologist and district athletic director, a dual responsibility that informs his holistic approach to athlete wellbeing. He previously coached at Our Lady of Lourdes and Catskill High before joining Saugerties in 2016, bringing a wealth of experience to the program.
The recognition also placed the school in the spotlight of local sports history. Scott Wickham, the last Saugerties coach to receive the Freeman honor in 2015, watched proudly as Pugliese added his name to the list of celebrated mentors. Family members Jessica Pugliese and Cameron Pugliese, who have been supportive throughout the season, were also acknowledged.
