Savannah Breaks Ground on $5.5 Million Basketball Gymnasium at Pennsylvania Avenue Resource Center

The new facility, part of the Recreation Reimagined Initiative, aims to expand recreational access across the city.

Savannah is set to construct a $5.5 million basketball gymnasium at the Pennsylvania Avenue Resource Center, a project slated for completion in the second quarter of 2027. The 11,300‑square‑foot facility will feature a full‑size gym, locker rooms, administrative offices and a snack bar, expanding the center’s existing suite of social services, job‑training programs and fitness classes.

Community Leaders Praise the Initiative

City Manager Jay Melder emphasized the importance of creating safe and productive spaces for families, while Mayor Van Johnson described the groundbreaking as part of the city’s “march of equity” to ensure all neighborhoods have access to high‑quality facilities.

The project marks the second groundbreaking in as many days for the city, following a $9.8 million community center opened on Savannah’s south side, underscoring a rapid push to upgrade recreational infrastructure across the municipality.

Alderwoman Linda Wilder‑Bryan said her next priority is a resource center in the Bacon Park area, reflecting a broader ambition to replicate the model across the city and to provide diverse recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
