Deering Joins Aztecs
Sawyer Deering, a right‑handed pitcher who spent his freshman year at the University of Tennessee, announced his commitment to San Diego State on Tuesday, bringing a fresh arm to a program that has become a regular contender on the national stage.
During his debut season with the Volunteers, Deering appeared in ten games, posting a 6.75 earned run average and a 1.35 walks plus hits per inning rate, numbers that placed him at No. 356 overall and No. 108 among right‑handed prospects in the 2025 recruiting cycle.
San Diego State, a school that has logged fourteen NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 2017 and 2018, finished the 2026 campaign with a 36‑24 record. The Aztecs’ tradition of postseason play makes Deering’s addition a strategic boost as they aim to extend their tournament streak.
Portal Turmoil at Tennessee
The commitment comes at a time when the Volunteers’ roster is in flux. Sixteen players have entered the transfer portal this offseason, a movement that reflects both the competitive pressures of modern college baseball and the program’s shifting strategy.
Among the departures, three transfers have already found new homes: Wyatt Hanoian, Braydon Kersey and Brody Trosclair. Meanwhile, several other Volunteers have signaled their intent to return for another season, underscoring the fluid nature of the current roster.
Deering’s move illustrates how individual career decisions can ripple through an entire conference, reshaping team dynamics and altering the balance of power as the next chapter of college baseball unfolds.
