School Bus Overturns on U.S. 17 Exit Ramp, Driver Charged with Reckless Driving

Four Injured, Investigation Ongoing After Crash Involving Douglas Byrd High School Football Team

A school bus transporting members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned on an exit ramp from northbound U.S. 17 to westbound U.S. 74 in North Carolina early Tuesday afternoon.

The vehicle was traveling above the posted speed limit when it lost control, careening onto the ramp and flipping onto its side. Emergency responders arrived within minutes.

Authorities reported that 33 individuals were aboard, comprising 26 students and seven adults. Four occupants — two students and two adults — sustained non‑life‑threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

All students and staff were released from medical care, though one staff member remained under observation out of an abundance of caution. The driver, identified as Annette Blount, was subsequently charged with reckless driving and exceeding a safe speed.

Charges and Ongoing Investigation

The legal proceedings against Blount underscore the seriousness of the incident, while the ongoing investigation seeks to determine whether additional factors contributed to the loss of control.
