Crash on U.S. 17 Exit Ramp
A school bus transporting members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team overturned on an exit ramp from northbound U.S. 17 to westbound U.S. 74 in North Carolina early this week.
The driver, Annette Blount, was taken into custody and later charged with reckless driving and exceeding the posted speed limit, according to the local highway patrol.
The bus was carrying 33 occupants, including 26 students and seven adults, when the accident occurred while returning from a matchup at South Brunswick High School.
Injuries and Hospital Response
Four people — two students and two adults — were transported to a nearby hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries; all others were released, though one staff member remained under observation for precaution.
Investigation Underway
State troopers and local law enforcement are reconstructing the crash scene to determine exactly how the vehicle left the roadway and whether any additional factors contributed to the loss of control. Authorities have indicated that the inquiry will examine road conditions, vehicle maintenance and driver conduct.
Cumberland County Schools confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and pledged to review safety protocols as the community processes the incident.
