Crash Details
Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, a school bus traveling westbound on the U.S. 74 exit ramp from northbound U.S. 17 in Leland, North Carolina, entered a curve at a speed greater than recommended and overturned. The vehicle was transporting members of the Douglas Byrd High School football team.
Annette Blount, a 57‑year‑old driver, was behind the wheel when the accident occurred. She has since been charged with reckless driving with wanton disregard and exceeding a safe speed.
Injuries and Immediate Response
The bus carried thirty‑three people, including twenty‑six students and seven adults. Two students and two adults were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries. The remaining occupants were moved to a Brunswick County mass evacuation bus for evaluation.
All four injured individuals were treated and released, and no fatalities were reported. Emergency crews secured the scene and cleared the ramp before traffic resumed.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have opened a full investigation to determine how the bus entered the curve at an unsafe speed and whether any additional factors contributed to the crash. The findings will be released as the inquiry progresses.
