The 23rd annual Schuylkill League Football Media Day was held at the Schuylkill Haven Sports Performance Center, bringing together every coach in the league for a coordinated media session that underscored the importance of exposure for student‑athletes.
A New Chapter for the Schuylkill League
Organized by the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association, the event gave each of the 14 coaches a chance to speak about player development, media training and the upcoming season’s structure, while also streamlining interview logistics for the coaching staff.
Mike Farr, head coach of Schuylkill Haven and a driving force behind the media day, highlighted how the collective interviews help players grow into leaders while reducing the need for separate media engagements throughout the year.
Joe Tomtishen, in his first year as North Schuylkill’s head coach, expressed excitement about navigating media engagements for the first time, underscoring the event’s role in preparing athletes for public exposure.
Division Realignment and Schedule Details
The league will split into Division I with six teams and Division II with eight teams beginning later this summer. Division I will feature Blue Mountain, North Schuylkill, Panther Valley, Pine Grove Area, Pottsville and Tamaqua, while Division II includes Mahanoy Area, Marian Catholic, Minersville, Nativity, Schuylkill Haven, Shenandoah Valley, Tri Valley and Williams Valley.
Heat acclimatization drills start on August 10, with the first padded practices scheduled for August 17. The first padded scrimmages could begin as early as August 22, and the inaugural regular‑season matchups are set for September 18.
Dave Shiffer of Pine Grove noted that media day marks the official start of serious training, and players are eager to see what the new season holds.
Looking Forward
Beyond the on‑field action, the league is ending its partnership with the Colonial League, a move that reflects evolving regional dynamics. As coaches and athletes turn their focus to the upcoming schedule, the excitement built at Media Day promises a vibrant and competitive season ahead.
