North Carolina’s baseball program received a boost this week as longtime head coach Scott Forbes signed a contract extension that will keep him at the helm through 2031.
Forbes’ track record
During his six seasons at Chapel Hill, Forbes has guided the Tar Heels to six NCAA regionals, four super regionals and two appearances in the College World Series, cementing his reputation as one of the most effective coaches in recent memory. A native of Sanford, North Carolina, he played collegiate baseball at NC Wesleyan before returning to his home state to lead the program.
The university’s administration responded to growing external interest by reaffirming its financial commitment to the baseball program, a move that will significantly raise Forbes’ compensation. The extension not only secures his leadership through the next decade but also signals a long‑term investment in the team’s competitive future.
South Carolina had been courting Forbes for its own coaching vacancy, but after a thorough evaluation elected to appoint Kevin Schnall, formerly of Coastal Carolina, to the position. Schnall’s move marks a new direction for the Gamecocks, while UNC avoids a potential vacancy by retaining the coach who has become a cornerstone of the program.
Forbes, who was promoted to head coach in 2020 after the retirement of Mike Fox, has repeatedly emphasized his dedication to UNC and his pride in representing the university. His continued presence is expected to shape recruiting strategies and player development as the team looks ahead to the upcoming seasons.
