Scott Pionk Takes the Helm of Superior High School Boys Hockey

A veteran coach aims to restore the Spartans' storied legacy

A Veteran Coach Returns to Wisconsin

Scott Pionk, a coach with four decades of experience across every level of amateur hockey, was introduced this week as the new head coach of the Superior High School boys program, taking over from Rob Downs who stepped down after a lengthy tenure.

Pionk’s journey began at age 19, when he started guiding youth teams in Proctor while studying at the University of Wisconsin‑Superior, a path that led him to a national championship with the Northland Voyageurs in 1992 and later stints as head coach and general manager of the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL.

Reviving a Tradition

Ella Olson, Superior’s athletic director, said Pionk’s deep roots in the community and his proven ability to develop talent made him the clear choice, noting that his philosophy of encouraging multi‑sport participation could help reverse a decade‑long championship drought.

The Spartans, who boast 13 state titles — the most in Wisconsin hockey history — have not captured a championship since the early 2010s, a slump that Pionk hopes to end by revitalizing youth programs and fostering a culture that values diverse athletic experiences.

Looking Ahead

While the coaching staff is still being finalized, Pionk has expressed interest in bringing aboard alumni who remain connected to the program, a move that could strengthen community ties and inspire current players.

Beyond the locker room, Pionk’s vision extends to the broader region, where he aims to collaborate with local schools, clubs, and organizations such as USA Hockey and the Duluth News Tribune to promote the sport and secure resources for the next generation of athletes.
